HONOLULU SURPASSES 1 MILE GOAL FOR GUINNESS WORLD RECORD™ LONGEST FLORAL LEI TODAY, MAY 1ST, FOR LEI DAY Honolulu, HI – Mayor Mufi Hannemann, 2008 Lei Day Queen Paulette Kahalepuna, and representatives from presenting sponsor HECO and major sponsor Times Supermarket, tied the ends of the world's largest lei around noon today, to make the circle complete. This was no ordinary lei – after final measurement with a measuring wheel, which was supervised by two Notary Publics and videotaped, the final tally was 5,336 feet – 56 feet over the mile goal the organizers had set for themselves. (One mile = 5,280 feet). Now, all of the documentation required by "Guinness World Records™" (GWR™), – video, photos, witness statements, Notary confirmation, media coverage, and much more, will be sent to GWR™ in England for review. The process may take a few weeks. GWR™ already had the category on their list of record attempts, but there is no current record in the book. So, although the City could have done as little as a hundred foot lei, they wanted like to make a record that will stand for a while with a lei at least a mile in length. Local residents and visitors flocked to Kapiolani Park with their lei to make the event a success. The Mayor will announce when the record is made official by GWR™. CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS
